1 Witch Hunter Garthur

1.1 To a stranger

At first glance, if looking at a changeling, Garthur looks like a typical changeling, if anyone else knows what a typical changeling looks like but doesn't know any well enough to call friend.

But anyone unfamiliar with changlings might find an ghostlike figure (at 11 stones, 1.8 meters) with a snow-white skinned, light-grey haired, solid-black iris and pupil eyes a strange sight.

1.2 For the ref

As young changelings Ask and Diis became friends with and a group of six elves (not changelings). They had the names Olafur, Sunna, Hilda, Signe, Gary, and Spike, the eldest of them.

One day they all found a magic book while hiking in the forest. The book possessed the first to touch it and enslaved the others, transporting them them to a deep ravine hidden by magic and hiding itself. The youths called out for help, but no one came. One by one, the terrors of the book forced the friends to change into hideous monsters who then attacked the remaining survivors.

Eventually Diis and Ask found and burned the book and found a way to escape the ravine, but Diis died before escaping. Even with the book gone, it continues to give Ask nightmares. After this, Ask took the name Garthur Alansbarn.

Garthur identifies as an antitheist; all magical deities, theological beings, and gods wrongfully meddle in the freedoms of common folks and forsake all those who worship. Garthur wants revenge against all magical beings that oppose, threaten, or enslave. This includes traitorous monarchs who claim thrones by the power of their god.

Garthur eventually served under Captain Krank, though he knew him before he had his commission, back as a sergeant. Whenever on r&r Garthur constantly insists "Sarge" should pickup the tab.

4 Log

4.1 2021-01-29

998 Eyre 23 oh-900. I don't know how, but I got Minotaur blood on this page. How long ago was that? A few weeks? I still have the nose ring. I might need it for something.

We finished up an early morning conversation with Vishtai and had the rest of the day to do what we wanted. I think… I blacked out again. The petrifaction recovery hasn't gone as smoothly as berry brandy. We were… on the train and now we're back here again. I'm not sure what has affected me the most, anymore, childhood or the war. And when did Haefy get back? There's something slipping my mind about him right now. I might need to have a private discussion.

So everyone else spent the next hour or so arguing about what we were supposed to do. All we have to do is escort the ambassador back to the train…. no we're good. Was it Coin or Silva? I need more coffee. Coyne. Right. I'm not sure if Sarge knows I've been drinking his supply, but I did help pick up a huge bag way back when we were in… Kennels? Rust Bucket? Greywall? That city made us all feel the dread.

We just have to figure out what happens after the meeting. I spent the entire mission trying to figure out who keeps talking in my head. I told them about it at one point. At least once. And I'm pretty good at projecting from my head.

We quite spent some time discussing what we were going to do. Brut decided to track down Sgt [dzjer-MEIN] Vilroy near a garden talking to some gnome. She wasn't very impressed with his new horned helmet…. head… But I think it's great, because if I'm going this as part of a team, I better be the least conspicuous. And of course Wynn is both very fancy and mighty, drawing attention in a better way. But both of them awe inspiring. So I think I'm covered.

So we headed out with her, to some other places in town. I think we drew some looks… our group really needs to pack light when we march around town. I don't need this damn leather armour. Completely useless against petrifaction anyway! I was in my head too much and I had a difficult time not shifting in plain sight with the mood.

We arrived somewhere else and Vilroy talked about her contact within "the family". Apparently the B-Clanners think they've found a Daask cell. She showed us a newspaper. "Royalty Trying to Fly?" A bunch of (five) folks falling from their balconies. One of the reporters was there when some clerics used speak with dead. I think it read "Kerik van der Hof" and they'd liquefied themselves into a gravity puddle. Said he'd been taking dreamlily to go to sleep. But the last batch had a dark tint. I don't think my stash has that description. Anyway, apparently taking it gave him "lightning" feet and the urge to run to his balcony where he thought he saw a golden eagle to save him and he jumped. What the Khatesh does that mean!

Vilroy basically handed off a few leads, but mainly this: The family physician typically supplies the dreamlily, but denies supplying the tainted darkened variety. Did they check? Everyone's gone soft since the war ended…

Also, she said something about the Daask at Greyflood, perhaps. We know Dagger who has a pawn shop there. Always asking for shiny trinkets to buy, but I honestly don't know who buys it… in Greyflood.

Also, also… I need to study sorcery to learn Detect Thoughts this ring doesn't give me what I need… And again, dammit, I had blacked out again… Skyways. The city that floats, air-gapped from below. That's an accident waiting to happen. I've had my uni-coin on me ever since I got back to this over-and-under-gineered metropolis. I should probably pick up another one just in case someone else forgets. Like that say around here, "In a noir [city], things don't necessarily end well".

We mucked around for a while and decided to head over to the Drunken Dragon in the mid-afternoon hours to find Daniel aka "Bruiser". The common area had almost no one there. Gifnys, an elf, was working the bar. She seemed really interested in the novelty of meeting a bearded and horned warforged. I ordered the same thing as Sarge, just to make it easier, but then he started down a rabbithole of soliciting his coffee.

During that symmetrical commercial attempt, we looked around, there were in fact a few folks around, but no one interesting. Sarge and Brut played darts. They wagered something about who would have to go through the door first, and Sarge lost.

And just at that moment, Dagger showed up, launching a magical dagger at the target, dead center, and then recalling it to his hand. We went to a private party room and Dagger bought us all round of drinks, but I as usual stuck to my one drink unless we're dying rule. He mentioned a rat and small lizard problem in Greyflood. And a "hub-ub" as in an explosion. Apparently that's bad for business. We agree to meet him at 20:00 at his shop to go investigate a possible Daask hideout by the river.

Over the next few hours Sarge teased Brut about his horn arrangement. And Haefy joked about being an imaginary folk. Ferdy did more drawing. I searched around for more contraband, but the ring gave me nothing more than endless void. After a while, Sarge and Brut played more darts, and the rest of us just relaxed.

We met at Dagger's Pawn, that driftwood-assembled establishment. Brut, Dagger, and I left to investigate the potential rat and lizard problem, which I hope leads us to the Daask. Also hopefully, Wynn takes a look around the shop.

Traveling along quietly, now under the cover of night, we made it to a particular street or alley. Dagger stayed back. Brut tripped over a rubbish bin and then I tripped over him, but nothing happened. Which is good because usually that polarizes the bystanders, so either we're being hunted or we're safe. A little farther we peeked down a path. I could make out two folks, possibly "hub-ub" causers guarding the entrance to either a fort or a castle. But instead of attacking we decided to go back to get help. Because we wanted to let Sarge go first. And then we ran into a cart with more hub-ubbers.
